After all the rumours concerning Samuel Eto'o and his move to Bunyodkor, formerly known as Kuruvchi, and then signing of Luizao, ASInfo informed that Rivaldo terminated his AEK Athens contract and signed for Bunyodkor. However, the official site of the Uzbek club says nothing about it. Is it real or is it just another marketing game?

In the European Youth Championship qualification round, Kazakhstan crushed Poland 3:0! This is a day of glory for the Kazakh team, as Poland fielded the likes of Rzeźniczak and Kuklis who have already made their debut in the senior national team. Even though many players were missing in the Polish squad, such a big margin of victory can only cause sheer happiness among the young Kazakh team.

After the 6:1 win against Sugdiyona in the Oliy Liga, reigning champions Pakhtakor set a new record. This game was the 47th one in a row without a loss for the cotton pickers. The goals were scored by Magdeev (2), Z. Tadzhiev (3), Pinto. Zayniddin Tadzhiev is now the top scorer for Pakhtakor, with 9 goals. Bunyodkor is still 5 points ahead of Pakhtakor but the reigning champions have one game in hand.

Underdogs in European Cups

After three days of my laziness, I am coming back with some fresh news from the underdog football arenas. Let's see how the underdogs did in the European Cups:

Big applause should go to Anorthosis Famagusta. The Cypriot team crushed Greek giants Olympiakos 3:0 and have a great chance to progress to the group stage of the UEFA Champions' League. Other underdogs in the CL played either each other or did not perform very well.

It was a great day for Cyprus also in the UEFA Cup, as Omonoia Nicosia managed to defeat AEK Athens in Greece! It's gonna be really hard for the former legendary player and current president Demis Nikolaidis' team to get through Omonoia.

Midtjylland also managed to cause a surprise with their away win in Manchester. Just like Lech Poznan, who crushed Grasshopper Club... 6:0! Let's also keep an eye on Gyor, who lost 1:2 in Stuttgart and can somehow sneak through if they play well at home.

AFC Challenge Cup medals given

In the third place playoff, DPR Korea defeated Myanmar with a large margin - 4:0. Even though Koreans counted on the final spot, they had to satisfy themselves with a third place. In the big final game, the hosts - India - won 4:1 against Tajikistan. Park Song-Chol from North Korea won the top goalscorer award with 6 goals.

New stadium in Tashkent

After the visit of Joan Laporta in Tashkent, a new stadium was set to be built in the capital of Uzbekistan. The new arena will have a capacity of 35000 people and will work as Budyonkor ground. The team has also signed a deal with FC Barcelona by which they will have a chance to train at the Catalan club's facilities and play a friendly between the teams. Until the stadium is built, Budyonkor will continue playing at the MHSK ground.

Three-year-old PFC Bunyodkor (formerly known as Kuruvchi) drew 1:1 in a big derby of Tashkent against the legendary Pakhtakor team. What is more, Bunyodkor was a better team and this draw can be treated as a loss of 2 points. They lost a goal in additional time of the second half and Server Djeparov missed a penalty earlier. What is more, Pakhtakor played with one man less as Ismailov was sent of in the 77th minute. Goals were scored by Villanueva (8, B) and Tojiev (92, P). To my surprise, Murad Zukhurov took Pavel Bugalo's place in goal in this match. 18210 people watch the game.

WAFF Championship kicks off

In Iran, the 5th edition of West Asian Football Federation Championship was started yesterday. In the inaugural match the hosts crushed Palestine 3:0. In group B Syria drew goalless with last year's hosts Jordan. Six teams are taking part in the championship, with Qatar complementing the first, and Oman the second group. The biggest missing of this tournament is the absence of Iraq. The silver medal holders disbanded their team and did not sign up for the 2008 WAFF Championship.

AFC Challenge Cup

I somehow didn't write any updates concerning the AFC Challenge Cup that's taking place in India. Eight teams were competing in the final competition, with 4 left to play for medals now. The only undefeated team in the group phase - North Korea - was beaten by Tajikistan in the semi finals. The coach of Tajikistan, Pulod Kodirov, was more than happy to see the reigning champions advance to the final. However, it will be hard for Tajikistan to retain the title as they will be facing the host team of India. The teams met in the group phase and the match ended in a 1:1 draw. India eliminated Myanmar in the semi final. Both gold and bronze medal matches will be played on Sunday.

Great derby tonight!

In the shade of the Beijing Summer Olympics, the great derby will take place tonight. I am of course talking about Pakhtakor - Bunyodkor match in Uzbek Oliy Liga. Last three matches ended in a draw and if tonight's game also ends like this, Bunyodkor will be pretty sure of their championship dream coming true. However, with only two points separating the teams it is still possible for Pakhtakor to jump ahead of the club sponsored by Neftgazmontaj. Bunyodkor will be double-motivated as their new affiliate club FC Barcelona sent their chairman Joan Laporta to watch the match. Maybe Server Djeparov will finally seal his European move? On the other hand Pakhtakor will do their best to retain the title. Big game is expected, so you're all welcome to MHSK Stadium in Tashkent.

Pakhtakor '79 Memorial Tournament

Remembering the Dniprodzerzhynsk tragedy of 1979 when the whole squad of Pakhtakor Tashkent died, the club decided to organize a memorial tournament to honor the victims. The eight participating teams were split into two groups. Group A consists of Pakhtakor, RShVSMF, Andizhan and Chilanzar. The second group will see the rivalry of RKOR, DYuSSh-16, Tashkent Oblast Team and Yangier.

Kuruvchi is NO MORE!

Yesterday the Tashkent-based club by the name of Kuruvchi abandoned their name which they acquired in 2005 when they were founded. After winning the semi-final of the Uzbek Cup against AGMK Almalik, the board of PFC decided to change the name of the club to Bunyodkor. The reasons for this had been stated by Tavakkal Kadyrovich, vice-president of the club:

"Kuruvchi founded in middle of 2005 and in the beginning club had an amateur status. At the beginning club was found for members one of our structures for worker-builders and to visit football matches when they had a free time and to watch beautiful matches and share victory of their team together and relax their nerves after hard work. In a word we tried to organize for them spare time and I think with the given task we completely satisfied. In each year Kuruvchi grows to the top with high progress. In a short time we have progressed and conquered high positions in Uzbekistan but in Asia too. Progressing in sport results we reached to a level which should satisfied in modern professional football club. Taking into account all stage of changes and novelties in the history of our club we decided to rename club to Bunyodkor"

Kuruvchi/Bunyodkor were not the only ones who progressed to the Uzbek Cup final. The others were their rivals Pakhtakor, who crushed Neftchi Ferghana 3:0.

Lazaroni goes east

Well it's time to inform about the manager who led Brazil to winning Copa America back in 1989. After decent success with Maritimo in Portugal, Sebastiao Lazaroni decided to try his luck in the Middle East. The former Brazilian international coach signed a deal with Qatar Sports Club in order to strengthen their title ambitions for the next seasons. Will he succeed? I think very highly of him. We will see.

Syrian giants do the double

Just like last year, Al Karama won the Syria Cup, this time defeaing Al Ittihad in the final. They added this triumph to the national championship won earlier this season. The winning goal in the final was scored by Jehad Al Hussain, for whom it was the last match for Al Karama, as he is on his way to rejoin Kuwait SC.

Iraqi player banned for life!

Naft Al Janoob player Qais Issa was banned from playng football for life by the Iraqi Football Association after he attacked the referee when he was sent off in the game against Duhok. The whole situation ended in a big fuss, resulting in bans also handed for the club, the manager and other players, but those were just red cards or two-games suspensions. The club is now to play all their remaining matches away from home. Well, you have to pay for your stupidity Qais... What more can I say?

More bad luck for Bahrain

Losing the final of the Asian U-16 Championship is not the only instance of bad luck Bahrain had in recent days. As I already wrote, they are on tour in Europe and played Czech side Sigma Olomouc. Unfortunately, they were not able to defend the 2:2 draw and in the final moments of the game the Czechs scored the winning goal. Goals for Bahrain were scored by Mahmoud Jalal and Mahmood Abdulrahman. There is also a change in the tour plan, as they will be playing Crvena Zvezda (why do people keep on writing "Red Star"?) Belgrade instead of Besiktas on July 29th.

I am talking of course about the Asian U-16 Championship. In the great final youngsters from Bahrain won the lead after 44th minute goal by Ali Muneer Redha. Even though Australia went to the dressing room with one goal behind, the half-time team talks seemed to work. Three minutes before the end of the match Marc Warren buried the hopes of Bahrain and equalised. The extra time saw no goals. During the penalties session, both teams were very accurate and only the last miss of Abdullah Khalifa Mohamed sealed Bahrain's fate. Australia won 5:4 on penalties. Bad luck Bahrain, bad luck.

Few years ago Lomana Tresor Lua Lua was about to be one of the brightest young stars in the Premiership when he made his Newcastle debut. Well Sammy Eto'o have not signed a contract with Kuruvchi yet, but the case is not lost. He played in a reserve team's match and scored a goal for Kuruvchi, but still considers other offers from different clubs. It seems the saga will continue and we will keep on bringing new reports. This is what Eto'o said:

"There is an offer from Kuruvchi which is why I am here in Tashkent…that and to get to know the people and the interesting things about this country. (...) I want to say that I have offers from other clubs and the decision I make will be the right one for me. (...) Two legendary coaches hit Asia

Ex-Ghana coach and bronze medal winners at the African Nations' Cup Claude Le Roy was named the new Oman man in charge. His first great test will be Gulf Cup 2009. Oman are the hosts of this tournament and with the help of Le Roy they will be aiming for glory.

On the club level, legendary Brazilian goalkeeper and ex-Brazilian NT manager Emerson Leão was appointed as the coach of Qatari side Al-Sadd. Leão used to work in Asia with Japanese sides, but never worked in the Middle East. This is a massive test for the Brazilian. Will he manage to pass it?

Anyone living in England, Germany or the Czech Republic will be able to admire Bahrain national team as they are hitting the road to play clubs from those countries in their friendly tour. On July 19th Milan Macala's team will play against Sigma Olomouc, three days later against Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen and three days later with Stoke City. There is also a possibility that they will play Besiktas one day. Unfortunately, European fans will not be able to see two stars of Bahrain NT: Jesse (Jaycee) John and Hussain Ali Baba. The first one was not called up and the second is battling his injury problem. Still, if I had a chance I would not miss this opportunity to see Ala'a Hubail and co.

Some Asian transfers news

The transfer window in Asia is very busy this year. Following Samuel Eto'o's supposed Kuruvchi move (he will come to Tashkent on Thursday to sign the contract) further news came from the East. Ex-Ajax star and Moroccan international Nourdin Boukhari has signed a two-year deal with Saudi outfit Al-Ittihad. In Qatar on the other hand we have a domestic transfer between the two rivals: Al-Rayyan and Qatar national team 21-year-old midfielder Waleed Jassem, seen as one of the top prospects for the future in the country few years ago, joined Qatar SC. He will try to rebuild his form there for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers.

Dreams sometimes come true - don't stop believing

If a virtually unknown player states in an interview that he dreams of playing in a top European club, it is usually treated only as a dream. However, these dreams may sometimes come true. Especially when your name is Harvey Delano Esajas. The Amsterdam-born defender of Surinamese descent made his professional debut at the age of 19 with Feyenoord Rotterdam against their arch-rivals Ajax and scored a goal. But just before his debut season, he broke his opponent's jaw in a friendly match against Den Helder. This was one of the hints of his attitude - to never give up. Esajas didn't have much success in Dutch football, from time to time playing for first and second division clubs, but most time sitting on the bench or at the stands. He tried to find his luck abroad but had some unsuccessful trials with Italian clubs. Finally he found his safe haven in Spain where he surprisingly joined... Real Madrid. He tried to get into the Castilla (reserve) team but was also unsuccessful. He moved on to semi-professional sides like Zamora and Mostoles and retired from football in the latter. Being still only 27, he joined a local circus troupe and acted there for three years. On one occasion, he went to Milan to visit his friend Clarence Seedorf. Upon hearing the news that Esajas wants to restart his football career, the Dutch international recommended his friend to Carlo Ancelotti - the AC Milan manager. After heavy trainings and losing much of his weight, Esajas was able to complete the move and soon signed a contract with the mighty AC Milan. That day Harvey Delano Esajas showed that when you have a dream - be sure to follow it, as if you try hard, it can come true no matter what it is. Esajas made his debut for AC Milan in a Coppa Italia match when he subbed Alessandro Costacurta two minutes before the end of the match. What's more, just like he scored a goal in his Feyenoord debut, he had a chance to have an assist in his Milan debut. Unfortunately, Jon Dahl Tomasson missed after Esajas' pass. The Dutch hero continued training for Milan, eventually getting a move to lower division sides Legnano and Lecco (not to be confused with Lecce), where he ended his career for the second time. The fresh information is that Harvey Delano Esajas now works as a coach in SC Buitenveldert where he trains youngsters. I don't know how good a coach Esajas is, but he surely is the right person to guide these boys mentally and to teach them to never give up their dreams.

Now the Uzbek side loaned Barcelona star Samuel Eto'o for six months in order to help the team in their AFC Champions' League campaign. What will be Saipa's answer? Cristiano Ronaldo? We'll see. We do. After 95 minutes of a very tough match against Suryoye, Padania are the new VIVA World Cup champions! The new title holders went on a quick 2-0 lead with early goals of Colombo and Ligarotti, then in the second half Suryoye tried to score, but were unlucky. All in all the more experienced team won and the players are now coming home with the cup.

The bronze medal play-off at the 2008 VIVA World Cup has already ended. With a great help of the Norwegian referee, the hosts Lapland won 3:1 with Kurdistan. The medals went to Sapmi, but the bitter taste remains. If it was not for Jimmy Nielsen and his whistle, the match could have gone either way. Still, the result is official and the hosts can be happy with the bronze medals as they were underperforming throughout the whole tournament. Now let's wait for the great final between Padania and Suryoye!

Final stage of the group phase

So here we are at the final stage of the 2008 VIVA World Cup group phase. In the match between Padania and Suryoye - the two finalists - the team composed of players playing in nothern Italian clubs managed to win 4:1 after goals by Stefano Salandra, Michele Cossato and two by Andrea D'Alessandro. The two teams will play each other tomorrow in the great final. In the battle for the bronze medal play-off spot the hosts Sapmi finally won a game and defeated Provence 4:2 as expected. The tiny micronation occupied by France lost all their games and still needs to improve if it wants to be competitive in future. So tomorrow Kurdistan will play Sapmi in the 3rd place play-off and Padania will try to stop Arameans in the great final. No matter what the results will be, it was a great tournament to follow!

Aramean sensation shocks the world!

Being touted as underdogs, the unexperienced team of Suryoye won their 3rd consecutive match and are on a way to the great final against Padania. Today the team composed of lower Swedish league players of Aramean descent, managed to snatch a 1:0 win against Kurdistan and remained second in the group table. Their final game is going to be against Padania tomorrow at noon. Whatever the result, the teams will meet again in the final one day later. Title holders and hosts Sapmi will play Provence at 16:00 CET. The winners of this match will play Kurdistan in the bronze medal play-off at 11:00 CET on July 13th. If this match ends in a draw, Sapmi will advance as they have 1 point in comparison to zero collected by Provence.

In the game of the season in Uzbekistan Pakhtakor drew 1:1 with Kuruvchi and maintained two-point gap between the two, with Kuruvchi as leaders. With almost 25000 people watching the big game, Kuruvchi won the lead in the 31st minute after a strike of their new star Jose Luis Villanueva. The result remained unchanged until the end of the first half. During the break, Alexander Geynrikh came on for Tadjiev and soon had a chance to equalize, but missed a penalty in the 50th minute. Seven minutes later, he finally scored. The final result: 1:1 and the question who's better in Uzbekistan remains unresolved.

As the new season kicks off in Qatar in September, clubs are now looking for heavy reinforcements. The biggest highlight is the signing of Swiss international Hakan Yakin by the reigning champions Al Gharrafa. He will team-up with the Iraqi star Younis Mahmoud in the attacking formation of the team, unless the last year's Asian Player of the Year runner-up moves to Europe. Qatar SC on the other hand signed two internationals: ex-Premiership player Youssef Safri from Morocco and ex-Gremio guy Roger from Brazil. It's not a dream no more - Uzbek teams started signing really good players. After Marković joined Pakhtakor in winter, now their rivals from Kuruvchi beat this effort and signed Jose Luis Villanueva - 4 times capped Chilean international - from Universidad Catolica. Among others, he 27-year-old used to play in Argentina for Racing Club and for Vasco in Brazil. Moreover, he is a journalist and a devoted globetrotter, so it dosn't really surprise me that he chose this destination. Tashkent is shining bright on the map of the football cities with the greatest potential for the future. Now Villanueva will team-up with the likes of Djeparov, Kapadze and Bakaev in the AFC Champions' League campaign.

Yesterday in Lapland we had an opening ceremony and the first match, in which Kurdistan managed to hold title holders and hosts to a draw and the final score was 2:2. That was a kind of sensation, as I predicted easy win for Sapmi. Today another match - Padania plays Provence. We'll see how the little nations occupied by France and Italy will do.

Complaining about poor wages and low bonuses, the players of Zimbabwean league side Masvingo United decided to go on strike and abandon their preparations for the big derby game against Underhill. The club maintains that the problem is of no significant importance but the reality is different. The trainings are not being continued on a regular basis and even the coaches complain about money. The players don't want to play against Underhill in the league match as a means of protest. We'll see what future will bring.

Two days ago the qualifying round groups of the Asian Cup 2011 were drawn. Japan and Bahrain will face rather easy test with Hong Kong and Yemen as their rivals. The second group seems to have more competition in it with Australia as sheer favorites and Indonesia, Oman and Kuwait fighting for the second place. Third groups sees Uzbekistan and United Arab Emirates trying to fight of Indian and Malaysian challenge. The fourth group seems not so strong but very even, as Vietnam, China, Syria and Lebanon play each other. In the fifth, Iran will play Syria, Singapore and Jordan, so no easy task for any of those. The qualifiers will kick off in January 2009, so the teams still have time to prepare.

They climbed from 115th to 92th place, getting ahead of such teams as Algeria or Iceland. However, they were not the best climbers. Suriname went 58 places up(!) from 145th to 87th and Burkina Faso made a 47 places climb, from 111th to 64th. Burkinabe players are now ahead of Slovakia, South Africa, Peru, Latvia or last World Cup finalists Togo. Great improvement for Paulo Duarte's team. After a poor start of the season, Pyunik Yerevan sacked their coach Armen Gyulbudagyants and replaced him with Vardan Minasyan. Kuruvchi maintain lead

Uzbek league last year's surprise package and this year's AFC Champions League revelation - Kuruvchi - maintained their lead in the domestic league after beating a strong opposition of Ma'shal Mubarek 2:0 with goals scored by Server Djeparov and Viktor Karpenko. The vice-leaders from Pakhtakor also recorded a two-goal victory over Bukhara. After 16 matches Kuruvchi sit comfortable at the top of the league with 34 points. Pakhtakor are second with 32. The rest are over 10 points behind the leading duo.

Two best teams from each group will advance to the World Cup finals in South Africa, the third teams will play each other in a continental play-off and the winner of this meeting will play an intercontinental play-off with the winner of the OFC zone qualifiers.

For the first time in history, a big company will sponsor Amahoro Cup - the second most important football event in Rwanda. MTN Rwandacel - mobile communication company - will inject Frw20 million in order to develop football in Rwanda and Africa. MTN also sponsors 2010 World Cup and African Nations Cup. Iraqi FA sacked the NT manager

After Iraq lost to Qatar, they were eliminated from the World Cup race. This resulted in sacking of Adnan Hamad - Manager of the Year 2004 award winner in Iraq. The days of Hamad's team are now gone and a new team is going to be built on the basis of the reigning continental champions. The whole team is now disbanded and the FA withdrew Iraq from the WAFF Championship. The goal of that is better preparation to the 2009 Gulf Cup and Confederations Cup.

Heavy chaos in URA, tough times for Maji

Ugandan two times champions (2006, 2007) - Uganda Revenue Authority FC - is in a middle of squad chaos. They released two goalies: Joseph 'Mayor' Babigumira and Musa Muhammad and replaced them with Eddie Kawesa - ex-Maji keeper. That's not the end of their problems, as they also axed eight outfield players. New season is bound to start soon and URA will compete in both local league and CECAFA Club Championship in Tanzania. Eddie Kawesa is not the only potential missing for Maji in the next season however, because Haruna Mulindwa is on his way to Nalubale, while Bosco Semugenyi is expected to join Simba FC. Tough times ahead of Maji this season.

Asian President's Cup

2008 Asian President's Cup has oficially started. On the first day of play, Tajik Regar-TadAZ defeated Pakistani team WAPDA by one goal, scoring a 2:1 win. In the other Asian President's Cup match, Nepal Police Club trashed Bangladeshi Abahani 4:0. Three goals were scored by Jumanu Rai in the latter match. The young Nepalese was linked with Maldivian clubs lately and is to join Vyansa soon.

2010 World Cup Qualifiers results - 22.06.2008

Another home-win day for African zone yesterday, after ALL BUT ONE ended with a home win. The only exception was Zimbabwe's 0:0 draw with Kenya. In other zones, Uzbekistan suffered a heavy defeat in Saudi Arabia (0:4), but this match had no effect on the final outcome of the qualifiers, as both of the teams had already secured advancement to the next stage. Iraq played Qatar in Dubai and lost 0:1, which allowed Qatar to go through to the next round. UAE lost to Syria 1:3 at home but still go through, because of better goal difference. This goal scored yesterday saved them, because Syria needed to win by three goals or more. In CONCACAF all eyes were focused on Netherlands Antilles, who could eliminate Haiti and sensationally go through, but they were eventually stopped. Haiti won 1:0 and went through. Another surprise package - Bermuda - also failed to defend their first leg lead (2:1) and lost at home to Trinidad & Tobago 0:2 and as a result were eliminated.

Busy schedule in the World Cup qualifiers when the teams prepare for the struggle to get to the finals.

In Africa only one surprise: Sierra Leone managed to snatch a goalless draw in South Africa which is their huge success. On other areas, African speciality - home wins. Zambia won 1:0 with Swaziland and equaled with them on the top of Group 11. Nigeria continues their perfect record and clean sheet after another win - 2:0 with Equatorial Guinea. Cameroon had some problems with Tanzania but eventually won 2:1 and also remained leaders of their group. In group 9, Tunisia won 2:1 with Burundi and the leaders from Burkina Faso remained with a perfect record after trashing Seychelles 4:1. Other African giants - Morocco and Senegal - also recorded comfortable wins.

In CONCACAF, Saint Lucia couldn't stop Guatemala and finally lost 1:3. Mexico trashed Belize 7:0.

Tough times for Pyunik

Today Pyunik Yerevan could have shortened the gap to the Armenian league leaders Ararat when the two teams met in the battle of giants. Aratat - Armenian champions from 1993 - are now the leaders of the league, after some years in obscurity. Pyunik, after seven championships in a row are on a verge of losing the title this season. With two games in hand, they were 7 points behind Ararat (who had 1 game in hand). Unfortunately for Pyunik, today's derby game ended in a goalless draw and even if Pyunik manages to win their game against Ulisses, they will still be 4 points behind the leaders. Tough times for Pyunik indeed. Let's keep our eyes on the Armenian league in forthcoming weeks.

2010 World Cup Qualifiers

As I wrote yesterday, New Caledonia had a chance to end Vanuatuan and Fijian hopes of World Cup qualification today when at 5:00 CET they were facing Vanuatu in Noumea. As predicted, New Caledonia won 3:0 and thus became the only team who can obstruct New Zealand's way to the final playoff with the fifth team from the AFC zone. Congratulations for Didier Chambaron's team for achieving that.

Meanwhile, other zones are also playing. Yesterday Canada defeated St. Vincent & The Grenadines 4:1 and Algeria won by single goal with Gambia. In the last African match Libya trashed Lesotho 4:0. Next matches are due to be played today and tomorrow. I will keep you informed.

VIVA World Cup 2008

After moderate success of the VIVA World Cup organized for NF-Board teams in Occitania in 2006, on July 7th the new edition will kick off in Sapmi (Lapland). The hosts are also title-holders after they defeated Monaco... 22:1 in the 2006 final. Other participants of this year's VIVA World Cup are Padania, Provence, Kurdistan and Bethnahrin. Unfortunatelly, previous edition's medalists: Monaco and Occitania will not participate. Sapmi remain huge favorites, but Kurdistan is not without chance. Also Padania, strengthened with ex-Inter star Maurizio Ganz will provide stern opposition. The teams will play in a group of 5, then the first two will play the final match and the 3rd and 4th place will compete in a bronze medal playoff.

Football talent and an academic wonderkid, started high school at the tender age of 12 and at 15 was picked by FC Dallas in the MLS Superdraft with number 2. After spending a year in the reserves of the Texan team, Abdus Ibrahim, joined the Canadian based MLS team - Toronto FC, where he is going to develop further. TFC head coach John Carver said he would not hesitate to pick Ibrahim in the first squad when he sees him fit. Will the Abdus Ibrahim fulfill the hopes of Ethiopian and American fans, or will he be another teen prodigy who would never make it as big as he could. Time will tell.

Moldovan midfielder joins Azeri champions

Ex-international Moldovan midfielder - Oleg Shishkin - who lately played for Avangard Kursk in Russia, signed a contract with the winners of Azeri league - Inter Baku. The 33-year-old midfielder will have a chance to prove himself again in Europe, because his new club will soon start their Champions' League campaign. They will know their rivals in the first preliminary round next Friday, when the draw is taking place.

It had to happen some day. The Tajik league leaders Regar-TadAZ Dushanbe finally lost. Their slayers were Khudjand and the only goal was scored by Mansur Khakimov... ex-Regar player. Although it was the first defeat of Regar, they have to look behind because Parvoz Bobojon Ghafurov are only one point short and have two matches in hand. Regar have to also remember that they have the Asian President's Cup campaign ahead of them. Things are getting interesting in Tajikistan.

OFC prepare for decisive battle

Tomorrow at 5:00 CET in Noumea the home side of New Caledonia will have a chance to deny Vanuatuan and Fijian dreams of World Cup qualification when they meet the Robert Calvo's side. If New Caledonia defeats Vanuatu, they will remain the only team who can still jump ahead of group leaders - New Zealand - and win the OFC World Cup qualifiers. However, the winner will still have to play a playoff with the fifth team from the AFC World Cup qualifiers in order to advance to the final tournament. The winner will also be honored as 2008 OFC Nations Cup winner and will represent Oceania in 2009 Confederations Cup.

Tajik player in Poland

There are rumors in Poland that a Tajik player Iskandar Gadoev is on trial with several Polish clubs, namely Korona Kielce and Lechia Gdansk. Gadoev is a 20-year-old striker, who plays for CSKA-Pamir Dushanbe in the Tajik league. In the 2007 season, he scored two goals for his club. He represented his country in the 2005 Islamic Games and in 2006 Asian U-20 Championship.

Will Gadoev become the first ever Tajik player in the Polish league system? Time will tell

Transfer rumor

What a great news came from Slovakia! After Uzbek Aziz Ibragimov joined Slovan Bratislava some time ago, it's time for another Asian underdogs to make it to the Corgon Liga. FK Dubnica are reported to be interested in two Maldivian players: Ali Ashfaag and Mohammed Arif.

Ali Ashfaag is a 23-year-old striker who plays in a domestic club VB SC, but have already had a foreign experience, having played for Malaysian league outfit DPMM FC.

The second player - Mohammed Arif is Ashfaag's teammate on the club level and a midfielder.

Let's watch those guys progress in the European football ranks. I hope other countries will follow Slovakia's example and I'll be happy to inform you about further Asian players being transferred to Europe.

Great Maldives!

Great news came from Maldives. This tiny football nation which lost 0-17 to Iran during the Coupe du Monde '98 qualifying round, is now proud of their players after winning the South Asian Football Federation Championship. In the final, Maldives defeated favorites from India 1:0 after a late goal scored by Mukhthar Naseer in 87th minute. That was the first ever international competition won by Maldives and the players were honored as national heroes by the president of Maldives - Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Each player was given prize money for participation in this historic success.

After the players came back to Male, 15000 fans took part in the celebration organized to honor this triumph. Each of them could take photographs with the cup. The players drove off the stadium by cars painted in national colors and with names and numbers of each player printed on them.

What is more, the president promised that every citizen of Maldives will have a chance to touch the cup, which is now to be shown to the people on every inhabited island.
